"The building itself is an extraordinary combinaison of interconnecting shapes. Orthogonal blocks in limestone contrast with curved and bent forms covered in titanium. Glass curtain walls provide the building with the light and transparency it needs. Owing to their mathematical complexity, the sinuous stone, glass and titanium curves were designed with the aid of computer.
Limestone was chosen, among its other virtues, because of the way it blends with prédominant background imposed by the facade of the University of Deusto. The glass walls were mad and installed in a complex métal structure built using cutting-edge technology.
Despite being totaly translucent, the glass used in the Museum Bilbao is treated to protect the interior from heat and radiation, and half-millimetre thick " fish-scale" titanium panels cover mots of the building. This attractively rough look of the scales is an effect the architect was looking for to give the surface greater tactility and beauty.
As a whole, Gehry´s design creates a spectacular, eminently visible structure that has the presence of a huge sculture set against the backdrop of the Puente de la Salve, the river, the buildings in the city centre and the slopes of Artxanda." Guggenheim Muséum Bilbao, 19 may 2012.
